Garden Drum or Is it Stool?

This photo is of a garden drum I have personally owned for 20 years.  It has moved to almost every room in the house, including the screened porch and has been used as a table and a seat.

Oriental Garden Drums or Stools,  even the Asians use this term so I am not feeling any pangs about being politically incorrect.  These 18" ceramic stools have been around forever and have relevant use in today's interiors or exteriors.  The beauty of these little pieces is that the ceramic material makes it adaptable for outdoor or indoor.  The 18" height makes them adaptable as a seat or a small side table.  Just large enough to hold a drink but small enough to tuck between two chairs.   They are small enough to use in today's downsized interiors and the color and selection are endless.  Pictured here is a traditional blue and white garden drum between two wingbacks.  This photo of an unfinished living room is from the 80's.
When this vingette was finished the chairs were moved closer together.  The garden drum used as a table is as relevent today as it was in the 80's.

The garden drum is a powerful little piece of furniture and well worth the cost.  Fortunately, the industry is producing more today because of the strength of the Asian influence on the market.

This version from Emissary home  reflects a more contemporary look.  This 12" square version sports a metallic finish in cinnabar or seaweed.
This traditional stool has the turquoise finish so popular in today's market.

This garden drum  from Oriental Accents is made elegant with the handpainted finish and deep Victorian colors.
This Circles stool available from Emissary Home will pop in any modern interior or exterior.

These are just a few examples of how versatile these little stools/tables can be.  Whether the spring weather finds you wanting to dress up your patio or porch or you need a small table to tuck somewhere, the Garden Drum or Stool might be a great Little investment.

  1. Recently had the time to do a little retail shopping. I noticed that said garden drum/stool is available through lots of vendors. Beware: If the top of the drum/stool is not flat it will be difficult to use said piece as a surface. Also, check the height for use as a table surface.
